The God of Gamblers

While the God of Gamblers films do not feature the triads as bad guys, they are all about the corrupt system at work which allows triads to be protected by using their close ties with politicians and the police. Like the God of Gamblers films, The God of Gamblers is an excellent example of how Hong Kong action comedies can be highly subversive to the status quo and the power structures that surround it. God of Gamblers II introduces four new playable classes of Chinese citizens including Kim Hong-sik, Jejong Kim, Joon Ah-gyeong and Kim Yong-woo. By the time of The God of Gamblers movie, it was time for Hong Kong cinema to be politically engaged and to take on its own role as a leading exporter of political satire. To that end, there were other, lesser films, and even no films at all in the entire first film.

The God of Gamblers is based on the comic book, which focuses on Wang Chi Wong, a lanky guy who has lost his fortune, who is drawn by a beautiful young woman named Chi-Chi.

The God of Gamblers, though, was a critical hit and set the tone for the next seven-decade of action-comedy movies in Hong Kong. The first God of Gamblers movie was so successful that the next seven-decade would be no different. By the time of Wong Jing's turn, in the 2010s, Hong Kong crime stories had become so successful that the "God of Gamblers" formula needed a new twist. The God of Gamblers (2013) was not an attempt to reinvent the wheel with a new film, but a sequel and a prequel. The God of Gamblers (2013) sees the "God" (Chow Yun-Fat) become the next "God" (Cheung Chi-tai) of the triads. God of Fortune is quite easy to learn and very satisfying to play. It is perhaps no surprise that Cheung Chi-tai has made a reappearance in The God of Gamblers, having resurfaced as a criminal boss after a time of hiding away in the city and then resurfacing as Cheung Chi-tai again.

The God of Gamblers is not, however, a TV series

If Cheung Chi-tai has reemerged in The God of Gamblers, the role he played in the previous films has not changed as he is still a criminal boss in the "God's Kingdom" (where he is known as 'Elder Brother'). This suggests that he is not only back to the triads but to the Hong Kong crime scene as a whole.
