God of Gamblers II

The Hong Kong version also includes scenes from the 1990 version. God of Gamblers III is an interesting one as it shows how the gambling business has undergone some significant changes since 1989. The movie follows a man named Wang Shuohua and the girl he meets, Mei Ying (Gong Li). The God of Gamblers is set in early 1980s Hong Kong, as a young man is looking for a job in a financial banking conglomerate. The moviesetting is New York City.

This is the beginning of a major shift in the American and Chinese relationship. In the 1989 film, the lead character, Cheng, had a gambling problem; but now he is a businessman, and his girlfriend Mei Ying works in his casino operations. The main difference between this film and God of Gamblers II is that Cheng is played by a Chinese-American actor, but the majority of the supporting actors are either American, Korean, Korean-American or Chinese. The Rise of Poseidon Slot Machine has a lot of slots and you are guaranteed a good number of spins each game. The main plot-point is the story of Cheng and Mei, who run a casino in New York, and her mother-in-law, Zhang. To make things more complicated, Cheng's girlfriend Mei Ying is engaged to be married to her father, and a gambling boss, Chen, hires him to take care of Shen Gong, Chen's brother.

The Chinese-American characters who are in this movie are also pretty familiar to those who have seen the 1989 movie. The Chinese version of God of Gamblers II uses Chinese names for several of the supporting characters. God of Fortune has 5 reels and 20 paylines to play across in.

The Chinese names of Chengson, Li Chang, are 歨岛 (lì chai) 靈貴 (Li Chaung) and Chen Chang 志宜 低世 (Chang Chen). In most of the characters of this movie, except Chen, the actors' names follow the same syllables, 我阿 (gwa) from the original English name. The Chinese version of the movie only uses English words: Gong Li. God of Gamblers (English subtitle) uses the exact same voice actor as previous films, but in a slightly deeper voice as the film progresses.

God of Gamblers II is a three part sequel to the 1990 film starring Chow Yun-fat, and its opening scene in the film's first scene also references Chow Yun-fat performing God of Gamblers III: Back to Shanghai.

In the Chinese version, this actor is played by Yu Shuwen 大它骨 who is actually a Taiwanese actor, but I cannot find a recording of this actor doing the voice. The name and age of this character as seen on the IMDB are given as "Yuan Hui-Kai" (young) and "Yu Wai-Kai". Although the film does include two American stars, they are played by Korean actors who are not Chinese in my opinion, and their names are not given. In the American version, Jing Wu is played by James Marsden.

I have found no video, so I cannot say how long he has been in the Chinese version of God of Gamblers. God of Gamblers II is very similar to the previous three films in that it is a well-done action comedy; and it also does an excellent job of portraying the modern-day Chinese-American relationship. While the characters and settings have changed slightly, the film does this with great authenticity and no cheap Hollywood-style CGI shots in between big action shots. God of Gamblers II is a fantastic example of how the relationship between gambling, the Korean-American community, and the American film industry can be a very useful model. Gambling in China is a complicated problem, but one which requires a lot of careful investigation and discussion among stakeholders.
