If you speak to moviegoers at the moment, many of them have mixed feelings about the state of Hollywood. Some believe the studios have become bereft of ideas, and that’s one of the reasons why we see so many sequels and reboots. Others are happy about the state of affairs, however, and they are excited by the fact they can keep returning to theaters to see familiar faces and stories on screen.
The idea of a sequel, or even a reboot, is not an uncommon one in the online casino sector either. Plenty of developers have looked at their most popular slots and thought, “why not release a sequel?”. A good example is Dead or Alive by NetEnt. The original was so popular that the company decided to release Dead or Alive 2. Moreover, some developers even reboot classic games. Thunderstruck II, a hugely popular game from Microgaming, recently got a makeover to bring it up to speed for 2022.
But there are many popular games out there that, in our view, are primed for a sequel. These are the types of games that have instant recognition among players. Below we pick out five that we would love to see get that Hollywood-like sequel:
Starburst (NetEnt)
Starburst has claims of being one of the most popular online casino games ever created. The smash hit slot from NetEnt is now ten-years-old, and people continue to play it today. NetEnt did release Starburst Extreme recently enough, but it wasn’t really a sequel. Extreme added a few different elements to the game, but it wasn’t a huge departure from the original. A new Starburst – or Starburst Megaways – game would be a guaranteed hit with players. NetEnt, which was recently taken over by Evolution Gaming, must be considering it.
Danger: High Voltage (Big Time Gaming)
BTG gets a lot of credit for its innovative slots, and rightly so, given that it formatted the first Megaways games. But one of its most unique games, Danger: High Voltage, remains a hugely popular choice for players. It is an eclectic game – weirdly based on a song by Electric Six – but it does feel like BTG could do something fresh with it. When it was released, it became a flagship game for BTG and a big hit among players who like high-variance slots. We’d love to see a new version.
Gates of Olympus (Pragmatic Play)
Gates of Olympus is by a distance the ‘youngest’ game on this list, having only been released by Pragmatic Play in February 2021. However, Pragmatic loves to release new versions of its popular games, and has already done so with games like Big Bass Bonanza and Fruit Party. So why not one of their most popular titles? Again, Gates of Olympus is beloved by those who love high-variance slots, and you’ll always see a lot of casino streamers on YouTube and Twitch play the game. A sequel would be a guaranteed home run for Pragmatic.
Top Gun (Playtech)
Now, there is some logic to this one. Playtech, arguably the most famous developer for branded casino games, released Top Gun many moons ago. It remains popular among players, but there is every reason to clamor for a sequel. Perhaps we could name it Top Gun: Maverick? The success of the Top Gun movie sequel surely guarantees good exposure for Playtech in this department. Of course, when it comes to branding rights, complications can arise. But Playtech does have a superb record of dealing with movie studios.
Drive Multiplier Mayhem (NetEnt)
It’s often the case that casino games studios do not get the credit they deserve for creating innovative slot titles. NetEnt achieved that with its brilliant Drive Multiplier Mayhem game. It has touches of the Fast and Furious franchise in the gameplay, theme, and graphics, so why not copy the movie franchise and have sequel after sequel. Seriously, though, Drive was such a cool offering by NetEnt, it would be so interesting to see what the studio could do with the all the modern technology it has at its disposal.
