It was ultimately decided to scrap plans for Diamonds Are Forever 1, a "reboot" of the franchise with a new theme and a new lead character, as well as a new Bond in Roger Moore. Despite his lack of screen time and having the lowest ranking of the series' Bond characters, his status as a "hidden villain" to most Bond fans came back to haunt him in a major way when, as the scene in 007's office shows, he is in the same room as Q in the following Bond film, The Spy Who Loved Me (1987, and is one of the first people to discover that Q had survived the events of the previous film and been put back in the hands of his captors. Q has now taken up residence on the island of Borneo. In this way, he has become the villain, and it has come to light, by a former spy, that the evil mastermind has been outsmarted and imprisoned by Q on the island of Borneo.
Bond, playing his alter-ego Agent Roger Moore, had to endure a very physical scene, as well as a very disturbing sequence where Blofeld (played by Pierce Brosnan) is subjected to the same brutal treatment that Bond receives. As he lay dying within a body bag, Moore's performance became increasingly grim; a similar situation was played out when Peter Sellers' Bond faced off against Bond's nemesis, Klaus Kinski (played by William Forsythe, who was played by Michael Caine. In the film, both Bond and Kinski were very cold, but it was the death scene that ultimately led to the downfall of Bond, particularly as that scene had the greatest negative impact due to Moore, who had already been killed earlier in the film, becoming visibly weaker due to wearing a rubber suit.
